RHINOPLASTY

 Rhinoplasty is a surgical process to improve the form of nose which is normally performed by an otolaryngologist, maxillofacial surgeon, or plastic surgeon. Rhinoplasty is also known as nose reshaping. Rhinoplasty can be performed to cure trauma, birth defects or breathing problems. Rhinoplasty can be done with other surgery such as chin augmentation and give good results.
Sushruta, was the first Ayurvedic physician in ancient India to reconstruct nose surgery and also known as the father of plastic surgery. In 500BC in his text Sushruta Samhita circa he first described nasal reconstruction. Later rhinoplasty was used to reconstruct noses that were amputated as a punishment for crimes. The report published in Gentleman's Magazine tells that the knowledge of plastic surgery existed in India up to the late 18th century.


Modern rhinoplasty surgeons’ precursors are Johann Dieffenbach and Jacques Joseph who used external incisions for nose reduction surgery. John Orlando Roe was the first to perform intranasal rhinoplasty in the U.S. in 1887.


Before 1970 all rhinoplasty surgeries were done by the intranasal approach and is known as closed rhinoplasty.In 1973, Dr. Wilfred S. Goodman article External Approach to Rhinoplasty help to change the rhinoplasty techniques and is known as open rhinoplasty Dr. Jack Anderson also popularized the open rhinoplasty technique. The open rhinoplasty become popular and was used for first-time rhinoplasty surgery and not for the review of surgery.

 

In 1987 Dr. Jack P. Gunter who got training from Dr. Anderson, in his article describe the qualities of the open rhinoplasty to approach for secondary rhinoplasty.
